For the second time in the past three years, the Kansas City Chiefs will face off with the Philadelphia Eagles, each team vying for the most coveted title in American football. Here’s what to know about each of these teams and the players to watch during the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs

For the Chiefs, a win at this year’s Super Bowl would be historic as it would be the first time any team has claimed the Lombardi Trophy three years in a row. But who are the players that got them this far? Who could be the ones to secure this three-peat victory?

A standout on the team is the quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. The youngest quarterback in NFL history to be named Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes is known for his methodical and cautious play style. Instead of charging ahead with unbridled aggression, Mahomes and the Chiefs make their way to the end zone in a controlled, calculated way. That said, when the time comes, Mahomes is lightning-quick on his feet, making him a massive threat. Though he suffered an ankle injury in December 2024, he’s expected to recover in time to play in Super Bowl LIX. Travis Kelce is another one to watch. When he’s not making headlines with his A-list partner, Taylor Swift, he’s on the field as the Chiefs’ tight end. Part of what makes Kelce such an asset is his adaptability; while he’s an excellent route-runner, he’s able to change his path on the spot when needed. This unpredictability and agility make him tough to guard.

“[Kelce is] such a unique, fascinating, incredible player,” said Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill. “He’s so unchoreographed in a lot of his movements. He’ll stem you in and you’re thinking, ‘He’s definitely going over.’ Then, he’s going back out. He’s a rare combination of speed, size and strength.”

The Philadelphia Eagles

Super Bowl LIX marks the Eagles’ fifth Super Bowl appearance; however, their sole victory was in 2018. With that said, there are a few players who could change their luck this year.

One of them is Lane Johnson who plays right tackle. He boasts brute strength and power, weighing in at 141kg and measuring almost 2m tall. With that said, he isn’t lacking in speed; his 40-yard dash time is an impressive 4.7 seconds, quicker than the average 5.3-second time for offensive tackles.

“This is a special, special man,” said Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland of Johnson. “You don’t see people with the athletic ability that he has. He’s really fast, really quick, great change of direction, really long.”

Also on the list is running back Saquon Barkley. Although he only debuted with the Eagles in 2024, Barkley has already made a massive impact. An incredible combination of power, athleticism, and awareness, Barkley left fans speechless in November 2024 when he executed a mindblowing reverse no-look hurdle against a Jacksonville Jaguars defender. Since then, he’s been a household name among Philly fans.

Super Bowl Odds: Who is Tipped to Win?*

The Chiefs are favoured to win this year’s Super Bowl, with their odds currently sitting at 1.8 to 1, whereas the Eagles’ odds are currently listed at 2.05 to 1. At the time of publication, the over/under for total points scored 49.5.

Patrick Mahomes is also the frontrunner to claim the Super Bowl MVP title once again in 2025, with 2 to 1 odds. Other contenders include Saquon Barkley (3.75 to 1 odds) and Jalen Hurts (4.5 to 1 odds). Meanwhile, both Barkley and Hurts are the top contenders for first touchdown scorer, with 4.5 to 1 odds and 6.6 to 1 odds respectively.

The Halftime Show: Everything You Need to Know

For many viewers (particularly those who aren’t avid sports fans), the highlight isn’t the game itself but the halftime show. In past years, a variety of A-list celebrities have performed, including Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. Gracing the stage at this year’s Super Bowl are Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Before kicking off their joint 2025 tour, the two artists will perform at America’s largest sporting event. As frequent collaborators, the two are known for their incredible music chemistry, which blends the genres of rap, hip-hop, neo-soul, and funk.

As for the setlist, viewers can expect to hear tunes like “All the Stars” and “Luther”, which both artists feature on. As for their individual works, Lamar’s No.1 songs on Billboard’s Hottest 100 have included “Humble”, “Bad Blood” (with Taylor Swift), and “Not Like Us”. SZA’s No.1 singles include “Kill Bill” and “Slime You Out”, meaning both could be included on the setlist as well.
